David Bryan Woodside (born July 25, 1969) is an American actor. He is best known for his television roles as the bass singer Melvin Franklin in The Temptations, Robin Wood in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Malcolm Franks in Single Ladies, Dr. Joseph Prestridge in Parenthood, the angel Amenadiel in Lucifer, as well as Wayne Palmer in the thriller series. David Bryan Woodside was born in Jamaica, Queens, New York City, on July 25, 1969. He has a B.A. from the State University of New York at Albany and an MFA from the Yale School of Drama.
Woodside started in the second season of Murder One in 1996, playing Aaron Mosley. After that series’ cancellation, he guest-starred on The Practice, Snoops, The Division, and Once and Again. He made a guest appearance on JAG in its final season as FBI agent Rod Benton.
From 2002-2003, he starred in 14 episodes of the last season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Robin Wood, the Principal of Sunnydale High School.
Next, he played the pragmatic Wayne Palmer, the Chief of Staff, on the Fox series 24. Introduced in the third season, he returned to reprise the role as a guest star in the series’ fifth season in episodes 1–2 and 14–18 and returned as a series regular for the sixth season as the President of the United States.
Woodside was a guest as Marlon Waylord in the 2004 CSI episode “Harvest.” In 2007, he was a guest star on the T.V. show Grey’s Anatomy in the show’s 4th-season episode “Forever Young,” wherein he played the character of Marcus. Woodside also guest-starred as a doctor in the USA Network Monk series finale
. In addition, he had a recurring role in the C.W. series Hellcats. In 2009, he starred in the first series of the U.S. drama Lie to Me. He starred as Malcolm Franks on the VH1 series Single Ladies, playing opposite Lisa Raye McCoy as Keisha Greene.
In June 2014, he began appearing in Suits as Jeff Malone. In 2016, he began playing the angel Amenadiel in the Fox/Netflix series Lucifer. In 2023, He starred as Erik Monks, a veteran U.S. Secret Service agent newly assigned to Maddie on the Netflix series The Night Agent.

ALBANY, N.Y. (April 11, 2023) — DB Woodside, B.A. ’91, who is best known for playing “Wayne Palmer” on the Emmy Award-winning series “24,” will deliver the keynote address at the University at Albany’s 2023 Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 13.
Woodside earned a degree from UAlbany in theatre before attending the Yale School of Drama. After graduating from Yale, he was cast as a regular in the T.V. series “Murder One.” From there, he starred in “The Temptations” and wrote and directed the short film “First.”
In the years since, the Queens native has had recurring roles on “24,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Suits,” “Single Ladies” and “Parenthood,” and guest-starred on other hit series, including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “CSI” and “JAG.”
Woodside also had a recurring role on the fourth season of Fox’s “9-1-1: Lone Star” and now stars in the Netflix political conspiracy thriller series “The Night Agent.
” He also recently starred in the highly successful Netflix series “Lucifer” and made his television directorial debut in the series’ sixth and final season.
On stage, Woodside made his New York theater debut starring in “The Conscientious Objector” as Martin Luther King at The Harold Clurman Theater.
He also starred in “Romeo and Juliet” at the Ahmanson Theatre and most recently at the Geffen Playhouse in “Skeleton Crew” — a performance that earned him an NAACP Award for Best Lead Male in the larger theatre category.
